Questions which are frequently asked on prints and work on paper

Do you have a printed catalogue?

No, our internetsite is the cataloque due to its flexibility in updating

What are artists’ prints?

Original artists’ prints are authentical, integer works of art made by artists in small quantities. This kind of art can be created in may handmade printing medias, for instance etching, litho, screenprint or woodcarving. A special tecnique is the pochoir (stencilprint with handcoloring)

Sometimes different tecniques are used in one print. Prints are mostly numbered - but not always - in the lefthand bottomcorner (for 12/35, which means - print number 12 from a series of 35. and in the righthand bottomcorner you find the artist’s signature.

But if there are more copies, there is no exclusivity?

Ofcourse you will not the same exclusivity as in a painting or a piece of sculpture of which there is only one. Prints are a more democratic form of art; more people can enjoy them. It is true prints are made in quantities, but rarely all prints are equal. Thre always differences because of the fact that the rpints are handmade. However, there are artists who exclusivily make prints , but there are also artists for whom printing is a sideline activity. By producing in quantities it is possible for more people to buy art from an ‘expensive’ artist.

Am I not buying a blind bargain, a pig in a poke ? How can I know if a larger quantity of prints is made?

You can’t know indeed, but beside some trial prints hardly ever more prints that indicated,  are made.

How expensive are prints?

For Dutch artists in general the price varies - with some very expensive exceptions like Kees van Dongen - between 400 and 1200 euro/other currency see
The Universal Currency Converter a print without a frame. The price depends on the artist"s name, tecnique, quantity and size, but the price is sometimes kept low on purpose.
